7 Makeup Items You Need For a Simple Night Out Look: Beginner Friendly

One question I often get asked by friends and family is “What makeup items do I need to have to do my own makeup?”. I recently had a friend tell me she didn’t like the way her makeup turned out because she didn’t know what products she needed to use to pull off the perfect look.

Not everyone can hire a Makeup Artist and let’s be honest there are times when you want to be able to do your own makeup especially when you’re invited to a last minute event.

So to alleviate some of the stress I find makeup enthusiast go through when it comes to the business of makeup, I decided to list seven products every beginner should have when they need to do their makeup for a night out.

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that these items are just MY suggestions, they are not mandatory.

Foundation (The Base)

Having a good base is extremely important for pulling off any look. Especially if you plan to take lots of pictures or a selfie for the gram. For a night out look, go for a medium or medium to full coverage foundation. Both give the most coverage depending on your skin’s texture and type. However, if you’re not a fan of the medium or full coverage look, use the foundation that you feel most comfortable with.

MAC Cosmetics

Maybelline Fit Me

Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation

The Ordinary Serum Foundation

Concealer

Since we’re keeping it beginner friendly, I would suggest getting two concealers; one that matches your skin tone which you will use to cover any hyperpigmentation or blemishes you may have and a concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone to brighten under your eye.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

LA Girl Concealer

Mascara

Next up is mascara. Depending on the effect you want, you can choose between a lengthening, volumizing or water proof mascara. If you have short lashes consider using an eyelash primer before applying your mascara.

L’oreal Volumunious Mascara in Blackest Black

ELF Volume Plumping Mascara

Lancome DEFINICILS- High Definition Mascara

Black or Black Brown Liner

If you’re daring and want to add a bit of sultriness to your eyes, adding a black liner to your lower lash line will do just that. Now if you’re worried about the eyeliner looking too harsh, just smudge it out with a pencil brush to smooth out any harsh lines. If you’re still hesitant, try using a black/brown liner instead.

NYX Slim Eye Pencil

Kiko Milano Kajal Pencil

LA Girl Eyeliner Pencil

Blush

If you’re reading this I am going to assume you either don’t wear blush at all because you’ve told yourself you don’t want to look like a clown or you don’t know what type of blush to pick. First let me say, you will NOT look like a clown. Second when it comes to blush it’s all about placement, the type of blush you use and the type of brush you use to apply it with. As a beginner, I would recommend starting out with a cream blush because it is more forgiving. You can apply it on the top of your cheekbones or on the apples of your cheeks and blend it out effortlessly. If you apply too much you can simply remove it with the brush you use to apply your foundation. In regards to brushes, I would suggest using a duo fiber brush. Keep in mind, the less dense the brush the less product you will apply.  Remember blush gives life to the face!

Lipstick/Lipgloss

No look is complete without a lipstick. For a night out I suggest going with a bold lip color. Reds, Violets and Corals are my colors of choice but once again pick a color that you feel the most comfortable wearing. If you don’t like wearing bold lipsticks then opt for a bold lipgloss. Most importantly, don’t forget to exfoliate your lips before applying any lip products to the lips, especially if you decide to wear a Matte lipstick .

MAC Cosmetics Lipsticks

Colourpop Cosmetics Lipsticks

Colourpop Cosmetics Lipgloss

Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick

Setting Powder/Press Powder

Finally, a good setting powder is necessary to ensure your makeup application last all night. If you want a bit more coverage you can use a full coverage press powder to set your makeup, if not you can use a loose powder to lightly powder your face. You can even apply setting powder on your eyes to absorb any oils on the eyelids.

Mac Studio Fix Powder Plus – Full Coverage

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish

ColourPop No Filter Sheer Matte Press Powder

Now you’re probably wondering why I didn’t mention eyeshadows. That’s because choosing which eyeshadow to wear is really up to you and your application technique. The seven products I mentioned will allow you to pull off a look even if you decide to forgo wearing eyeshadow. When it comes to applying makeup, it’s all about practice and patience. Do what makes you feel comfortable, have fun and most importantly wear your makeup confidently.

Until Next Time
